At approximately 3:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, state police troopers responded to a report of an overturned vehicle on the northbound Wantagh State Parkway to the Northern State Parkway eastbound ramp.

Upon arrival, troopers discovered a 2000 Honda Accord in the woods with the driver and sole passenger dead at the scene, according to state police.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the Honda exited the roadway at a high rate of speed, crashed into the guard rail, became airborne and then struck the light pole and large tree, police said. Identification of the victims are being withheld pending notification to their next of kin.

The New York State Police is requesting that anyone who may have witnessed this collision contact State Police Troop "L" Headquarters at (631) 756-3300. All calls will remain confidential.
